Living in a vacation destination like Playa del Carmen, I’m pretty much guaranteed to have a steady stream of visitors throughout the year.  My favorite times have been when my best girlfriends from back home have come to visit so in this post I’m sharing the perfect 4 day itinerary for a weekend trip to Playa del Carmen.

It’s full of restaurant recommendations, day trips, and nightlife including plenty of beach time, margaritas, and dancing!  This itinerary is geared towards those staying in downtown Playa del Carmen but I’ve included a lot of fun restaurants and bars to try even if you’re staying at an all-inclusive resort.

Arrive to Playa del Carmen and get settled in your hotel or apartment rental.  Check out a few of my hotel recommendations below.

Free time to soak up the sunshine and enjoy some margaritas by the pool.  Salud!

La Bodeguita del Medio offers free salsa dancing lessons Tuesday – Friday from 7pm – 8pm.  There’s a live salsa band and it’s a great spot for mojitos.

Catch is a rooftop restaurant at the Thompson Hotel Playa del Carmen.  It is a little more upscale but has great views and is a fun place for cocktails and sushi.

The majority of the nightclubs in Playa del Carmen are located on 12th Street.  It is a lively street that is always full of people.  Some of my favorites are Mandala, Abolengo, and Santito Tun Tun.  Be sure to get there early if you want to get in with no cover.

Day 2: Saturday

Que Huevos is the cutest breakfast restaurant near the end of 5th Avenue.  It’s a tiny spot with cute outdoor seating and offers a variety of American and Mexican dishes as well as coffee drinks and house made juices.

Isla Mujeres is the most beautiful island off the coast of Cancun and is the perfect place for a beach day.  You can take public transportation to the ferry terminal in Cancun and head over to the island from there.  Playa Norte is so stunning and offers many options for beach clubs and restaurants.

Cero Uno and Soma are chic rooftop clubs that are always packed and are known for their DJ appearances and house music.

Normally I would recommend El Ñero for tacos but El Fogon’s central location makes it a much easier stop for some tasty al pastor tacos after a night of dancing. They are open late and will most definitely be busy.

Day 3: Sunday

La Cueva del Chango is a popular breakfast restaurant on 5th Avenue and 38th Street which is known for its natural cave like setting. Their breakfast menu offers tasty chilaquiles, crepes, and egg dishes.

Playa Xpu-Ha is the most stunning beach that is located about 30 minutes south of Playa del Carmen.  You can easily take a colectivo to get there and spend the day relaxing on your own or enjoying the beach clubs.

La Famiglia is an authentic Italian restaurant that serves my favorite pizza in Playa del Carmen.  It is owned by an Italian family and they serve a wide variety of homemade pastas and Italian dishes.  It is a little bit more upscale and they have a cute upstairs seating area.

Fusion Beach Bar Cuisine is my favorite beachfront bar in Playa del Carmen for a chill night on the beach.  They offer live music and a nightly fire show starting at 11:30pm.

Day 4: Monday

Aloha Paddle Club is located at Fusion Beach Bar & Cuisine at Calle 6 and the beach.  Check out their website for standup paddleboarding options and pricing information.

Chez Celine is a French bakery and breakfast restaurant located on 5th Avenue and 34 Street.  They offer a variety of breakfast options including croissants, pastries, crepes, and omelets. The menu can be found here.

A trip to Playa del Carmen wouldn’t be complete without a shopping trip down the famous 5th Avenue.  Here you can stock up on a wide variety of Mexican souvenirs, clothing, leather goods, artwork, tequila, and novelty food items.

El Doctorcito is a hip spot for agauchiles, ceviches, and fish tacos.  It is always packed and they have a live DJ playing house music.

If you’re flying from the Cancun airport, you’ll want to leave about 3 hours before your scheduled departure time.  Until next time Playa!

Hotel Recommendations

If you’re trying to decide where to stay in Playa del Carmen, below are a few hotels I would recommend in the downtown area.

4/5

Mahekal Beach Resort is an oceanfront resort located in downtown Playa del Carmen.  With bungalow style accommodations and multiple pools and restaurants, it’s a true Mexican retreat but still close enough to the liveliness of Fifth Avenue.

4/5

Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen is one of the newest and most modern hotels in downtown Playa del Carmen.  It’s located on the beach and offers an infinity pool and plenty of poolside cabanas, and the views of the ocean from the lobby are really impressive.  With multiple restaurants and a full service spa, it’s the perfect place for a girls getaway.

3.5/5

Hotel HM Playa del Carmen is a moderately priced hotel in downtown Playa del Carmen.  It’s not located on the beach but more centrally located in the heart of Playa del Carmen, just a few blocks from Fifth Avenue.  It’s contemporary Mexican design is really cute and it has an impressive courtyard pool.

I’ll admit this is a pretty ambitious Playa del Carmen itinerary for a girls getaway but there are many fun options where you can pick and choose what works best for your schedule.
