Holbox Bioluminescence Tour: Details

Let’s look at some details of the Bioluminescence Experience in Holbox so you know exactly what to expect.

Duration

The Holbox Bioluminescence Tour lasts approximately 1.5-2 hours. You’ll be given your equipment ahead of time, and transportation to and from Holbox hotels is provided.

The tour usually starts around 9 or 10:00PM, but the exact time is subject to weather and the lunar calendar.

Location

The tour takes you to one of two of the best spots for viewing bioluminescent plankton in Holbox: off the coast of Holbox, near “Cafe del Mar” or the mangroves near Playa Punta Coco.

The exact location is usually not determined until the night before the trip because it depends on the water conditions and which is best for the magic of bioluminescence.

I went to the offshore location, and everything was perfect. The guide also said they prefer that location because there are fewer mosquitoes than in the mangrove channels.

However, both locations are excellent spots and offer beautiful glimpses of the bioluminescence in the calm waters around Holbox Island.

What to Expect on the Holbox Bioluminescence Tour

We’ve reviewed some of the finer details of the Holbox tour. Now, let’s summarize what to expect from the tour.

Wetsuit and Gear Drop Off

The tour operator will bring all necessary apparel gear to your hotel around 7:00PM on the night of your tour. You’ll get picked up at the designated time and should already be suited up in all the provided gear.

They provide wetsuits, water shoes, and a dry bag. Once you arrive at the meeting point, you’ll be given snorkel equipment.

You’ll give your height, weight, and shoe size when making your booking. If there are any problems with the sizings, you’ll have a few hours to get things sorted before the tour starts.

Hotel Pickup & Arrival

The tour usually begins around 9:00 or 10:00PM, though it may vary depending on the weather.

Pick-up time also varies depending on where your hotel is located. I was picked up from Villas HM Palapas del Mar by golf cart at 9:00PM.

After getting picked up, you’ll head to the meeting point near the mangroves or the beach. You’ll meet with the guide, Alex, and other group members joining from another golf cart.

Snorkeling Experience

Once you meet the guide and the rest of the group, you’ll be given snorkeling masks. Then, depending on your location, you’ll simply walk from the beach into the water or the mangroves.

The shallow waters aren’t intimidating, and despite walking ways out, the water is only waist deep.

The guide will explain everything you need to know about bioluminescence plankton and the chemical reaction that happens to make such a magnificent glow in the water.

When you move your hands under the water, the chemical reaction causes sparkling specks of light.

You can dip your head underwater to get a different perspective of the glowing and flashing lights in the water, but you won’t see too much because it’s so dark.

The best part of the bioluminescence phenomenon is wading in the water and waving your hand, watching the sparks come to life with your movement.

Holbox Stargazing

After you get some time swimming and walking around the beautiful Gulf of Mexico, you’ll have time to do some stargazing as a group from the water.

Holbox is one of the best places in the Yucatan peninsula for stargazing as there is very little light pollution.

Alex, our guide, has a lightsaber-type tool that he uses to point out all the amazing constellations.

We could see all the major ones, including the Big Dipper, Cassiopeia, Pegasus, and more. If you’re lucky, you might even see a shooting star.

It’s really cool to stand in the open sea and gaze at the twinkling stars, surrounded by glowing plankton and peaceful waves.

Return to Hotel

At the end of the tour, you’ll head back to the golf cart for a short drive back to your hotel.

If it’s raining out, the roads can be a little bumpy. There are no paved roads, and so during high seasons of rain, it gets muddy.

What to Wear on the Holbox Bioluminescence Tour

You don’t need anything other than your bathing suit for the Isla Holbox bioluminescence tour.

The tour company makes it as easy as possible. They bring a wetsuit and water shoes right to your hotel before the tour, and they pick them up the morning after your tour at 9:00AM, so you don’t need to bring a change of clothes.

Just wear your bathing suit under the wetsuit, and you’ll be good to go.

What to Bring on the Holbox Bioluminescence Tour

You shouldn’t bring any valuables with you on this tour. You’ll be in the water throughout the tour and away from the beach or golf cart.

I strongly recommend bringing some mosquito repellant. The mosquitos can be intense in Holbox and are especially bad if you’re swimming near the mangroves.

I just brought my belt bag with my phone, ID, and other small things and left it with the driver while on the tour.

But again, don’t bring any valuables, as they’ll be unattended through most of the tour.

Tips for the Holbox Bioluminescence Tour

Here are a few extra tips for the Holbox bioluminescence tour:

  • Bring bug spray: The mosquitos can be brutal, and you might be standing around a little at the beginning while hearing instructions, so bringing mosquito repellent will help, especially around your ankles.
  • Try to plan it for the new moon: The best time of the month to go see the magic is during a new moon. There’s little light pollution, so you can see the spectacular phenomenon with your own eyes. A full moon is beautiful but lights up the sky and, therefore, reflects off the water, making the plankton appear dimmer.
  • Try to avoid the rainy season: Although the Holbox bioluminescence season is year round, the rainy season (June-October) might make planning more difficult because of the muddy roads. The best time to visit Holbox for good weather and low chances of rain is between December and April.
  • Don’t bother with pictures: You won’t be able to take any good photos because of the dark, so don’t even bring your phone or camera near the water.  GoPros won’t even be able to capture it.
  • Listen to your guide: The guide will explain the chemical reactions that cause the glow and point out various constellations. It’s a great learning experience you shouldn’t miss.

Can you see the Holbox bioluminescence without a tour?

Technically, you can see the bioluminescent plankton without a tour, but it’s not recommended.

Even though the water was calm where we were, the guide warned us about nearby currents that you can get caught up in if you’re not careful.

Plus, it’s very dark at night in Holbox so the best way to experience this phenomenon is by booking a guided tour with a knowledgeable guide and special equipment.

Can you take pictures with a GoPro during the Holbox bioluminescence tour?

No, you can’t take pictures with a GoPro during the Holbox bioluminescence tour. It’s usually much too dark, and pictures don’t turn out so well.

Is there a place to leave valuables on the Holbox bioluminescence tour?

Yes, you can leave your bag in the golf cart with the driver. But I wouldn’t recommend bringing along valuables, just to be safe. Holbox is safe, but it’s always better to act cautiously with your valuables.

Can you do a Holbox bioluminescence tour all year round?

Yes, you can see the Holbox bioluminescent plankton year-round. However, you don’t want to go on a full moon. The light pollution from the full moon makes it hard to see the glowing plankton.

What type of plankton do you get to see on the Holbox bioluminescence tour?

Bioluminescence is a natural wonder caused by phytoplankton, a type of algae that floats on the water’s surface.

When disturbed by waves, fish, or other movements, the phytoplankton in Holbox emits a glowing green, blue color.

Where else can you see bioluminescent plankton?

Bioluminescent plankton is found in a few other destinations worldwide but Holbox is one of the only places to see it in Mexico.

You can also find the glowing plankton reaction in San Diego, Puerto Rico, Thailand, Cambodia, New Zealand, and Costa Rica.

Is the bioluminescence tour good for kids?

Yes, the Holbox bioluminescence tour is good for kids as long as they’re comfortable in the water at night. There was a small child on my tour who seemed to really enjoy the activity.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen: Don’t forget to add biodegradable sunscreen to your Mexico packing list!
