Yes, Holbox is generally very safe for tourists. The small island is known for its laid-back vibe and friendly locals, and instances of serious crime are very rare.

Most visitors that come to Holbox are looking for a quiet and peaceful getaway, which minimizes the chances of any safety incidents.

Plus, due to its remote location, cartel violence that unfortunately plagues other areas of Mexico isn’t as prevalent in Holbox.

However, like any tourist destination, it’s still important to exercise normal precautions to ensure your safety.

While petty theft and crime can occur, proactive measures like keeping your belongings secure and always staying vigilant can greatly minimize any risk.

And in terms of health safety, the island has medical facilities to deal with minor ailments or injuries, but for any serious conditions, you may need to travel to the mainland.

So given the island’s remote location and limited resources, the biggest safety concern for visitors is not having immediate access to specialized medical care.

The advisory states that criminal activity and violent crime can happen in popular destinations such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum but doesn’t mention Holbox as an area of risk.

While the remote island of Holbox is generally considered safer than mainland Mexico, it is still recommended that travelers should maintain a high level of situational awareness at all times when visiting Isla Holbox and avoid any areas where illicit activities are occurring.

Smart Traveler Enrollment Program

If you are a U.S. citizen, I would recommend registering for the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).

This program is a free service for U.S. citizens which allows you to submit your travel plans to the nearest United States embassy or consulate in Mexico. 

You’ll then receive news and safety alerts by email for the areas in Mexico you’re traveling to. I’m enrolled and have found it to be very helpful and informative!

They’ll alert you of any heightened safety situations and even natural disasters or weather advisories during hurricane season. Plus, it helps the U.S. embassy to contact you in case of an emergency.

How Safe is Holbox?

Normally I would refer to Numbeo for crime and safety statistics but unfortunately, Holbox is so small that it is not listed on the website.

So in the absence of actual statistics, I can share my personal experience and observations from my numerous visits to Holbox.

I’ve always felt very safe in Holbox, and it’s one of the safest places I’ve visited in the entire Yucatan peninsula.

I’ve gone both solo and with female friends and have never felt unsafe or uncomfortable, even when walking around at night.

One of my favorite things is that the entire island has a very chilled atmosphere and the locals are very welcoming and helpful to tourists.

The main downtown area is just a few blocks wide and there’s always a lot of people around. So, especially if you’re staying in the downtown area, you can feel very safe during the day and at night.

Now, if you’re staying at one of the Holbox hotels that are located further away from the town center, I would be cautious about walking alone late at night.

The streets outside of downtown can be pretty dark and there aren’t always street lamps so if you’re staying outside of downtown, it’s best to hire one of the golf cart taxis to get back at night.

Is Holbox Safe at Night?

Holbox is generally safe at night, especially in the downtown area. It’s a lively place for both locals and visitors, with many laid-back beach bars, restaurants, and live music options to enjoy.

Like in most towns in Mexico, there’s a main square with basketball courts, street food, and games for kids where families gather in the evenings.

And in the middle of downtown, you’ll find “The Hot Corner”, which is pretty much the most popular Holbox nightlife spot.

It’s a laid-back bar with live music where everyone gathers and dances out on the street. It’s safe and a great place for tourists to enjoy.

If you are staying outside of downtown or plan on walking around late at night, it’s always best to take precautions and not walk alone in remote areas.

As mentioned, the streets outside of downtown can be pretty dark so I would recommend hiring a golf cart taxi to get back to the more remote hotels.

Is Holbox Safe for Solo Travelers?

Yes, Holbox is generally very safe for solo travelers. The low Holbox Mexico crime rate and the island’s small size are major factors contributing to its safety.

It’s also one of the best places for solo travel in Mexico as there are several lively hostels and plenty of other travelers to connect with.

Plus, there are many different excursions in Holbox suitable for solo travelers, such as swimming with whale sharks, kayaking or paddleboarding, and booking a nighttime bioluminescence tour.

However, as with any destination, it’s always best to stay aware of your surroundings and take precautions such as not walking alone at night in remote areas and watching your alcohol consumption.

Is Isla Holbox Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Yes, Holbox is a very safe destination for solo female travelers. I have visited Holbox on my own and have always felt very safe in Holbox and have never had any concerns.

That said, it’s always smart to stick to well-lit, populated areas and maintain a good awareness of your surroundings.

It’s also important to follow general safety guidelines such as not staying out too late alone, not accepting drinks from strangers, and avoiding walking alone at night in remote areas.

I would also recommend staying at a hotel closer to the town center if you’re traveling alone as it will feel safer to be in a more populated area.

One of the best things about Holbox is that there aren’t any cars so you don’t have to worry about getting into a major car accident. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t any transportation safety risks.

The dirt roads can still get congested with golf carts and bikes, especially during peak tourist season. Make sure to always stay alert when walking around so you don’t get hit by a golf cart or bike.

And if you’re renting a golf cart, be cautious of your speed and extra mindful of pedestrians.

Sunburn & Dehydration

The hot weather and clear blue skies in Holbox are great for a beach vacation, but they can also pose some health risks.

Make sure to always wear biodegradable sunscreen and stay hydrated by carrying a reusable water bottle with you at all times.

Heat exhaustion and dehydration can easily creep up on you when you’re enjoying frozen cocktails all day on the beach!

As in most places in Mexico, food poisoning and water illnesses can be a risk factor in Holbox.

To avoid getting sick during your vacation, make sure not to drink the tap water and stick to bottled or filtered water while visiting.

If you’re planning to visit Holbox, you’re most likely going to be spending the majority of your time at the beach!

Holbox beaches are pretty idyllic, with powder white sand and very calm, shallow water–it’s the perfect place to relax under the palm trees.

You won’t really have to worry about large waves or strong currents as the beaches are usually very safe for swimming.

However, the biggest safety concern at the beach is just to keep an eye on your personal belongings. Only bring what you need to the beach and never leave valuables unattended.

If you’re staying a nicer hotel on the beach, the lounge areas are usually pretty safe to leave your belongings while you take a dip in the ocean but always keep a close eye just to be safe.
