What to Wear on a Tulum ATV Tour

Here is what I would recommend wearing on an ATV tour:

  • Swimsuit: Wear a one-piece swimsuit underneath comfortable clothes especially if you choose a tour with a cenote swim. That way you can hop right in the cenote to cool off.
  • Waterproof Shorts: Waterproof shorts are a great option to wear over your swimsuit to provide more comfort while you’re on the ATV.
  • Rash guard: Additionally, I would recommend wearing a long-sleeved rash guard or swim shirt over your swimsuit. These are great as they provide sun protection, limiting the need for harmful sunscreens. Plus, they’ll keep you warm in the cold cenote waters and help to protect your upper body from dust and debris.
  • Water Shoes: You’ll definitely need to wear closed toed shoes to protect your feet from rocks and debris. I would recommend water shoes or old sneakers that you won’t mind getting dirty to protect your feet during the ride.
Xplor Amphibious Vehicles

What to Bring on a Tulum ATV Tour

Here are a few things I would recommend bringing on an ATV tour:

  • Biodegradable sunscreen: I always recommend bringing biodegradable sunscreen as regular sunscreen is prohibited when visiting cenotes, and is generally just safer for the environment.  You’ll definitely want to bring some with you so your ATV excursion isn’t ruined by a sunburn.
  • Insect repellent: Since you’ll be spending a lot of time in the great outdoors, bug spray will also come in handy to combat mosquitos and other pesky insects that are abundant in the middle of the jungle.
  • Bandana: Some tours include bandanas, but if they don’t then you’ll definitely want to bring your own bandana or face covering to protect your face from dust and debris.
  • Sunglasses:  Don’t forget to bring your sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and any dust or dirt that may fly in them while you’re riding.
  • Towel: Since most tours include a cenote swim, you’ll likely be getting wet. Be sure to bring a beach towel to dry off after the water activities. These microfiber beach towels are a great option as they are lightweight and dry quickly.
  • Change of clothes: It’s also a good idea to bring a change of clothes to change into after the tour as you’ll likely be dirty or wet after the cenote swim.

Tips for ATV Tours in Tulum

Follow these tips to make the most of your ATV excursion in Tulum Mexico:

  • Combine the tour with other adventure activities: Zip lining and a cenote swim are the most popular activities that are often paired with ATV tours in Tulum. I would definitely recommend combining these more adventurous activities to get the most bang for your buck.
  • Book in advance: I would also recommend booking ATV tours in advance as tours can fill up quickly especially during high season (Decemeber-April). Most tour companies like Viator offer flexible booking options that allow you to cancel within 24 hours penalty or reschedule if needed.
  • Be prepared to get dirty: It’s pretty much guaranteed that you’re gonna get dirty on an ATV tour so be prepared and avoid wearing any cherished clothing.
  • Wear protective clothing: While you’re riding through the jungle, it’s best to wear protective clothing to shield your arms, legs, and face from dust, dirt, and debris. It can be hot so try to wear loose fitting breathable clothing to avoid overheating.

Traveling to Mexico soon?

These are the Mexico travel resources I use and recommend:

🏨 Hotels: I always find the best deals for Mexico hotels and resorts on Expedia or Booking.com. If you prefer a vacation rental, check VRBO as they are often cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

✈️ Flights: I recommend using Skyscanner for the best Mexico flight deals. Be sure to sign up for their price alerts for your preferred travel dates.

🚗 Rental Cars: I like to use Discover Cars because you can compare multiple car rental companies and see detailed ratings for overall value, ease of pick-up, efficiency of agents, car condition, and overall time spent.

🚙 Cancun Airport Transportation: I recommend booking a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation for the quickest and most hassle-free option!

🤿 Tours & Activities: I always use Viator or GetYourGuide for booking tours and activities in Mexico. You can cancel up to 24 hours before the tour for a full refund, plus they have excellent customer service if you were to have any issues.

🚨 Travel Insurance: After my Dad broke his hand in a taxi accident in Playa del Carmen, I always recommend buying travel insurance before your trip for added peace of mind! I recommend Travel Insurance Master for short trips or Safety Wing for digital nomads.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen: Don’t forget to add biodegradable sunscreen to your Mexico packing list! Regular sunscreen is prohibited when swimming in the ocean and cenotes in Mexico, so you’ll need to pack some biodegradable sunscreen for sun protection. I recommend Sun Bum Sunscreen, which is reef-friendly, vegan, and cruelty-free.
