Bacalar Mexico Hotels: FAQs

Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about staying in Bacalar Mexico resorts:

Where are the best places to stay in Bacalar?

When searching for your Bacalar accommodations, you can basically choose to stay directly on the lagoon (which will cost more) or stay in the center of town to be close to shops and restaurants.  I would recommend staying on the lagoon if your budget allows!

Are there all inclusive hotels in Bacalar?

There aren’t many all inclusive resorts in Bacalar Mexico.  Some hotels will include free breakfast, but you will need to pay for any additional meals separately.

Is there a beach in Bacalar?

Bacalar is a large lake so it doesn’t really have traditional beaches. However, there are shallower areas near the edges of the lagoon where you can relax in the water.

It’s more common to enter the water through the docks and piers that extend out over the water.

Where do you fly into for Bacalar?

For Bacalar, you can fly into the new Tulum International Airport (TQO), which is about 2.5 hours away, or the Cancun International Airport (CUN), which is about 4 hours away.

Technically the nearest airport is Chetumal International Airport, but it is a smaller airport mainly serving regional flights.

How long should you stay in Bacalar?

I would recommend staying in Bacalar for at least 2 nights. Since it takes several hours to get there from most nearby destinations, you’ll want to make sure you have at least 1 full day to experience the lagoon.

But if you want to relax and experience all the fun things to do in Bacalar, then consider staying for a week or longer.

Do you need a car in Bacalar?

Having a rental car in Bacalar is nice to have but not a necessity.  The town is mostly walkable and taxis and bike rentals are available if you need to go further distances.

If you don’t have a car, then you’ll want to stay in the town center to be within easy walking distance to restaurants, shopping, and the lagoon.

Conclusion: Best Hotels in Bacalar Lagoon Mexico

Are you ready to book your stay in Bacalar Mexico?! I hope this Bacalar Lagoon hotels guide was helpful in planning your stay.

While Bacalar is just a small town, there are still plenty of accommodation options available for everyone whether you’re looking for a budget hotel or a little bit of luxury.

If your budget allows, I would definitely recommend staying on the lagoon if possible.  There’s nothing quite like waking up and walking straight out onto the lagoon in the early morning hours!

But even if you don’t stay directly on the lagoon, the town is still very walkable and the lagoon will be easy to reach.

My top recommendation is OurHabitas Bacalar for a luxury glamping experience right on the lagoon or Hotel Aires Bacalar is a cute and trendy hotel in the center of town.

But no matter where you end up, you’re sure to have an unforgettable time in this very special place in Mexico!

🇲🇽 Traveling to Mexico soon?

These are the Mexico travel resources I use and recommend:

🏨 Hotels: I always find the best deals for Mexico hotels and resorts on Expedia or Booking.com. If you prefer a vacation rental, check VRBO as they are often cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

✈️ Flights: I recommend using Skyscanner for the best Mexico flight deals. Be sure to sign up for their price alerts for your preferred travel dates.

🚗 Rental Cars: I recommend using Discover Cars because you can compare multiple car rental companies and see detailed ratings for overall value, ease of pick-up, efficiency of agents, car condition, and overall time spent.

🚙 Cancun Airport Transportation: I recommend booking a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation for the quickest and most hassle-free option!

🤿 Tours & Activities: I always use Viator or GetYourGuide for booking tours and activities in Mexico. You can cancel up to 24 hours before the tour for a full refund, plus they have excellent customer service if you were to have any issues.

🚨 Travel Insurance: After my Dad broke his hand in a taxi accident in Playa del Carmen, I always recommend buying travel insurance before your trip for added peace of mind! I recommend Travel Insurance Master for short trips or Safety Wing for digital nomads.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen: Don’t forget to add biodegradable sunscreen to your Mexico packing list! Regular sunscreen is prohibited when swimming in the ocean and cenotes in Mexico, so you’ll need to pack some biodegradable sunscreen for sun protection. I recommend Sun Bum Sunscreen, which is reef-friendly, vegan, and cruelty-free.
