Wondering what is the best time to visit Holbox Island Mexico? This is the guide for you!

As a travel blogger that that has spent many years living in nearby Playa del Carmen, I’ve visited Holbox several times in different seasons.

The important thing to know about visiting Holbox is that the weather can definitely impact your trip! That’s because the dirt roads on the island can be particularly vulnerable to rain and weather conditions.

So, if you want to have the best time possible and enjoy the beautiful beaches and activities Holbox has to offer, you’ll want to plan your trip accordingly.

In this post, I’ll let you in on the best time to visit Holbox, as well as the average monthly temperatures and all the essential information about the high and low seasons, seaweed occurrences, hurricanes, and whale shark sightings.

Ready to learn more about the best months to visit Holbox to help you plan your perfect trip? Let’s get started!

What is the Best Time to Visit Holbox?

The best time to visit Holbox for good weather is from December to April. This period coincides with the dry season (so there is less rain), and the weather is a little cooler and less humid.

This makes it the perfect time to enjoy the island’s beautiful beaches and outdoor activities without much rain or humidity. I’ve been to Holbox in both March and April and the weather was perfect!

🐋 However, if you want to swim with whale sharks, you’ll have to visit between May and September. This is when they migrate to the waters near Holbox Island.

While Holbox has warm temperatures all year round, it’s best to visit during the dry season to avoid heavy rains and potential flooding.

There isn’t much to do in Holbox during heavy rain, so I’d recommend trying to avoid the peak rainy season, which is in September and October.

Additionally, there are no paved roads in Holbox. Instead, the island is made up of dirt roads that can get extremely muddy and sticky during rain.

When is the Worst Time to Visit Holbox?

The worst time to visit Holbox is during the peak rainy season in September and October. The roads in Holbox can get extremely muddy when it rains and there isn’t much to do.

The golf cart taxis in Holbox are more like four-wheel drives that are engineered to handle the muddy roads but walking around can still be very unpleasant and some roads are impassable on foot.

Most of the things to do in Holbox are outside and in nature, so the rain can really interfere with outdoor plans.

If you visit during the rainy or hurricane season, the best way to enjoy your vacation is to watch the Holbox Mexico weather forecast to avoid complications from bad weather.

Additionally, storms in Holbox tend to pass quickly and it’s possible that it might just rain in the morning or afternoon.

I’ve been to Holbox in October and while there were a few storms there was still plenty of sun.

When is High Season in Holbox?

The high season in Holbox is from December to April. It gets especially busy around the holidays: Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter (Semana Santa or Holy Week). People flock to the island for warm, tropical weather.

During the high season, it gets much more crowded. The beach becomes lined with people enjoying the sun, and restaurants, bars, and hotels in Holbox are more crowded.

It’s also the best weather of the year, with low humidity, warm days, and breezy nights. There’s not much rain compared to the summer months, as well.

Because of the influx of tourists, there are also higher prices during the peak season. Typically, resorts, flights, tour activities, local shops, and restaurants in Holbox have slightly higher prices.

When is Low Season in Holbox?

In Holbox, the low season lasts from May to November. During this time, Holbox Island weather is much warmer and more humid, and there’s a higher chance of rain.

There are fewer tourists traveling to Holbox during these months, so you can enjoy quieter beaches, more availability in resorts and for tour activities, and other benefits of a less touristy tropical island.

In addition to fewer crowds, things are normally much cheaper. September is the cheapest month to fly to Mexico, and you’ll also enjoy lower prices at the Holbox hotels with more availability.

Rainy Season in Holbox

The Holbox rainy season is from May to October, with September and October being the wettest months of the year. Sometimes, the rain does bleed into November, as well.

It can be slightly harder to enjoy the tropical climate during the rainy season because things get very muddy, and many of the best things to do on Holbox are outside on the beach and in the water.

However, it usually doesn’t rain non-stop. The roads may get muddy and hard to navigate, but there are always patches of beautiful sun throughout the weeks.

Average high temperatures are around 88°F (31°C) and low temperatures are around 72°F (22°C).

Hurricane Season in Holbox

The hurricane season in Holbox is from May through October, with the peak months being in September and October.

However, hurricanes are relatively rare in the state of Quintana Roo, and typically Holbox is safe to visit even during hurricane season.

The last major hurricane to hit Isla Holbox was Hurricane Wilma in 2005. The island was evacuated then, and the town was almost destroyed. However, the people of Holbox were able to rebuild very quickly.

During this time of year, there are also chances of tropical storms happening that can cause low tides and stop ferry services from running between Holbox and Chiquila.

Seaweed Season in Holbox

The seaweed season in Holbox is typically from May to October. The seaweed (“sargazo” in Spanish) blooms when the water warms up and spreads around the Caribbean when currents and tides change.

For years, Holbox actually escaped the bulk of the seaweed. People flocked from all parts of the Yucatán Peninsula to enjoy a seaweed-free oasis on Holbox Island. However, seaweed prevalence on Holbox has risen in recent years.

That said, it’s still not as bad as other popular tourist destinations like Cancun and Playa del Carmen. The seaweed comes and goes, and it usually doesn’t take heavy machinery to clear it from the island.

From my experience, there’s always been some seaweed in Holbox but it has a different texture than the seaweed in Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya. It’s more dry and less smelly, which makes it more bearable.

Plus, even when the seaweed is present, there are usually a few spots on the island protected by the currents.

For example, Playa Punta Cocos is a beautiful, untouched beach that generally doesn’t see much seaweed. Another great place to escape seaweed and crowds in Holbox is Punta Mosquito.
