Overall, the Atlantis Submarine is a unique experience suitable for a variety of ages and abilities.

Additionally, while the expedition is a unique and exciting way to explore the underwater world, it is a more low-key activity and may not be suitable for those seeking high-intensity water sports or adventure.
However, for those looking for a comfortable and educational way to explore the ocean depths, the Atlantis Submarine is an excellent choice.
Atlantis Submarine Cozumel Experience
Here’s what to expect on the Cozumel submarine expedition:
Arrival & Safety Briefing
When you first arrive to the Atlantis submarine location, you’ll enter the gift shop and be directed to the check-in counter to register, receive your wristband, and pay the $6 USD marine park fee.
It’s recommended to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time to get checked in and use the restroom.
After check-in, you’ll head down to the safety briefing area to watch an informational video about the Atlantis Submarine experience.
Boat Ride to the Submarine
After the video, the group will then starting boarding a boat (known as the “Ana”) that will take you out to the Atlantis Submarine.
At this point, you’ll also have the opportunity to have your photo taken by a professional photographer.
The boat ride is about 15 minutes, during which time the crew will provide an airplane-style safety briefing explaining the emergency procedures and equipment.
Boarding the Submarine
Once you arrive at the submarine dive site, you’ll have the unique opportunity to see the Atlantis submarine surface from the depths of the ocean. It’s pretty cool to see it pop up out of the blue!
The boat you’re on will then tether to the side of the submarine, where the previous group will exit and the new group will enter.
While boarding, you’ll be required to go down the hatch backwards on a 12-step ladder. The steps are pretty wide and it’s easy to navigate.
Once you get to the bottom, you’ll take your seat on a single-file row facing the large viewing windows.
My Cozumel submarine tour was completely full so every seat was taken! It did feel a little tight as you are basically sitting shoulder to shoulder without much wiggle room.
But the good thing is that there are airplane-style air vents in front of every window that provide a steady stream of air throughout the duration of the trip. So it never felt too stuffy.
Cozumel Submarine Expedition
Once everyone is seated and the doors are closed, the Atlantis Submarine will begin its journey to explore up to 100 feet below the ocean’s surface.
The submarine captains will communicate their commands for all to hear and the tour guide does a great job narrating all of the sights (in both English and Spanish).
On the Atlantis submarine expedition Cozumel, you’ll get to see the Chankanaab Park, La Pared, and the Felipe Xicotencatl shipwreck.
Chankanaab Park
The Atlantis Submarine excursion in Cozumel offers a unique opportunity to see the Chankanaab Park coral reef system up close.
The reef system is one of the largest and most diverse in the Caribbean and is home to a variety of marine life, including tropical fish, sea turtles, manta rays, and colorful coral formations.
Seeing the coral reef system from the submarine is a truly unforgettable experience and offers a rare glimpse into the beauty and diversity of the ocean depths.
La Pared
One of the highlights of the Atlantis Submarine expedition in Cozumel is visiting “La Pared,” (The Wall) the vertical drop-off located off the shores of the island.
This awe-inspiring underwater cliff plunges more than 2,000 feet into the ocean depths, offering a glimpse into the incredible scale and beauty of the underwater world.
As the submarine approaches the drop-off, passengers can see the dark contrast of the deep abyss below.
Felipe Xicotencatl Shipwreck
Another fascinating feature of the Atlantis Submarine expedition in Cozumel is the opportunity to explore the Felipe Xicotencatl shipwreck.
This sunken vessel, which was intentionally sunk in 1999 as an artificial reef, is now home to a diverse array of marine life, including vibrant corals, sponges, and schools of tropical fish.
As the submarine approaches the wreck, passengers can see the intricate details of the ship’s structure and the marine life that have made it their home. You’ll likely see a lot of scuba divers at the site too!
The crew provides informative commentary on the history of the ship and the ecological importance of artificial reefs, making this experience both educational and visually stunning.
And if you love Titanic as much as me, this will definitely be the highlight of the entire expedition!
Return Boat Ride
After the Atlantis Submarines Cozumel expedition is over, passengers will reverse the process to exit the submarine and re-board the boat.
On the return boat ride, you’ll also have a chance to review and purchase your professional photos if desired.
Personally, I didn’t feel the photos were worth it since it’s just one photo of you boarding the ferry boat and not the actual submarine.
Once you get back to the tour location, the Atlantis tour concludes and you’re free to leave, check out the gift shop, or purchase your photo package.
Is the Atlantis submarine safe?
Yes, the Atlantis Submarine is safe. The submarine is designed and built to meet the highest safety standards and is regularly inspected and maintained to ensure its safety.
The crew is experienced and highly trained to operate the vessel, and safety procedures are followed at all times.
Additionally, the submarine is equipped with a variety of safety features, including emergency air supply, life jackets, and masks.
While you’re on the boat ride to the submarine, the crew will explain in detail the safety features, as well as the safety procedures that must be followed during the journey.
Additionally, our guide mentioned that they have never had any safety issues in the past, which was reassuring to hear.
While any activity that involves water and transportation has some inherent risks, the Atlantis Submarine is considered a safe and reliable way to explore the underwater world.
What to Wear on the Atlantis Submarine Tour
The Atlantis submarine is a comfortable space so you can pretty much just wear normal vacation clothes. The submarine is air-conditioned but does not feel uncomfortably cold.
Additionally, you’ll want to wear comfortable non-slip shoes or sandals as you’ll be walking around the boat, submarine, and pier area.
It’s also a good idea to bring sunglasses and biodegradable sunscreen, as you will get some sun on the boat ride over.
While there is no dress code, it’s important to remember that the submarine is a confined space, so it’s best to avoid large backpacks, beach bags, or bulky items that could take up extra space.
Tips for the Atlantis Submarine Cozumel

- Bring motion-sickness bands if needed: If you tend to suffer from motion sickness, bring motion-sickness bands along for the ride. The submarine does have a bit of a rocking motion as you cruise along. I personally didn’t feel any motion sickness but I know it’s a common issue for many people.
