Walmart in Playa del Carmen is one of the most common and convenient places to pick up groceries and other essentials whether you’re living in Playa del Carmen or just visiting on vacation.
Most people are surprised to find out that Walmart actually has a few locations in Playa del Carmen, offering everything from groceries and household goods to clothes, electronics, and more.

While the selection isn’t quite the same as what you’d find at Walmart back home, Walmart in Mexico is a great option for those who want to save money and stock up on groceries and basic necessities.

Is there Walmart in Playa del Carmen?
Yes, there are actually 3 Walmart stores in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The most popular location is the downtown location (known as Centro), which has a convenient central location and is easily accessible if you’re staying downtown.
Walmart also has 2 locations on the other side of the main highway 307, both of which are located a little farther out from town center but still relatively easy to get to by car or taxi.
What is Walmart like in Playa del Carmen?
At Walmart supermarket in Playa del Carmen, you’ll find all the standard Walmart offerings, including groceries, household goods, clothing and accessories, electronics, toys, and more.
The Walmart stores in Playa del Carmen look and feel like a Walmart in the US, however, they are usually a bit smaller and don’t have the same broad selection of products.
For example, in the US there may be 10 different brands available for a particular product, whereas Walmart in Mexico may only carry 2-3 brands for any given product.
You can still find many American brands but the majority of products will be Mexican brands at a lower price point.
However, when compared to other grocery stores in Playa del Carmen, Walmart usually always has the best selection and name brands.
Travelista Tip: If you find one of your favorite products at Walmart, be sure to stock up! It’s not uncommon for name-brand items to go in and out of stock.
What can you buy at Walmart in Playa del Carmen?
Whether you’re looking for groceries, household goods, or other Mexico travel essentials, Walmart in Playa del Carmen has a wide selection of products.
You’ll find everything from fresh produce and baked goods to laundry detergent, toiletries, pet food, and more.
Walmart also has a selection of clothing and accessories for men, women, and children, as well as electronics such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

Walmart currently has three stores in Playa del Carmen:

Walmart in downtown Playa del Carmen (Centro) is the most popular location at 30th Avenue and 10th Street. This central location is where most locals and tourists will shop for groceries and everyday purchases.
If you live on the other side of the highway, consider visiting one of the other two locations (La Cruz or Petempich), which will be more frequented by locals.
How to Get to Walmart Playa del Carmen Mexico
These are the best ways to get to Walmart in Centro:
Walking
Walmart has a very convenient location and if you’re staying in the downtown area, it’s very easy just to walk there. From Playa del Carmen 5th Avenue, it’s only about 4 blocks away.
Take a Taxi
If you’re staying at a hotel or resort in Riviera Maya that is further away from downtown, the best way to get there is to take a taxi. There is a taxi stand outside of Walmart, where you can easily hail a taxi for the return trip.
Driving
If you have a car, it’s also very easy to get there by driving. Free underground and outdoor parking is available on site.
Walmart Playa del Carmen Opening Hours
Walmart in Playa del Carmen is currently open from 7AM-10PM on Monday-Friday and 7AM-11PM on Saturday and Sunday.
It’s also important to be mindful of the restricted hours for alcohol sales at Walmart if you’re going to be purchasing any liquor.
Alcohol sales at grocery stores in Playa del Carmen are typically prohibited past a certain hour during the week (usually 9 or 10PM).
Additionally, you can only purchase alcohol on Sundays from 9AM-5PM. So if you want to purchase alcohol at Walmart, make sure to go outside of these times!

Travelista Tip: Lines at Walmart can be very long — especially on Sundays. Avoid going during peak times and on weekends if possible.
Can you use U.S. dollars at Walmart in Playa del Carmen?
Yes, you can pay with U.S. dollars at Walmart stores in Playa del Carmen. Walmart has a set exchange rate and any change will be given in Mexican pesos.
Additionally, credit and debit cards can also be used to make payments at Walmart stores.
Walmart Playa del Carmen Delivery
If you’re looking for grocery delivery, Walmart offers a delivery service for both groceries and other products.
This is a great option if you want to stock the kitchen at your vacation rental at the start of your trip without having to waste time going to the store.
Simply place your order online by visiting the Walmart Playa del Carmen website and creating a new account. Walmart will then deliver the items directly to your delivery address on the day of your choice.
However, the Walmart Mexico website is only in Spanish so this could be a challenge if you don’t speak the language.
If you don’t speak Spanish, consider using a 3rd-party grocery delivery service like LoQSea that has an English website and can also bring groceries right to your door.
In addition, they are typically more flexible with delivery zones and customized orders.
Walmart Alternatives in Playa del Carmen
Here are some comparable alternatives to Walmart in Playa del Carmen Mexico. Some of these might be more convenient for you depending on where you’re staying.
Mega
Located just a block away from Walmart, Mega is the most comparable alternative to Walmart and is a large supermarket with many of the same types of products.
When comparing Walmart vs Mega in Playa del Carmen, I usually prefer Walmart because the selection is normally better. However, they are about the same size and both have very similar offerings.
Chedraui
Chedraui grocery store has two locations in downtown Playa del Carmen – one at Avenida Juarez and highway 307 and a brand new Chedraui Select at 34th Street and 10th Avenue.
The new Chedraui Select is a great option and is very convenient for those staying on the northern side of town near 38th Street or Coco Beach.
The store is very clean and modern but it’s much smaller than Walmart and doesn’t have much other than food and groceries.
Sam’s Club
There is also a Sam’s Club in Playa del Carmen, just south of the downtown area but you will need a Sam’s Club membership to shop there. I’m pretty sure your US Sam’s card will work in Playa del Carmen!
With a large selection of products and daily specials, Sam’s Club is another comparable option that offers some good everyday deals and bulk products.
Costco
There is not a Costco in Playa del Carmen, however, there is one in Cancun. If you really want to shop at Costco, consider making the 1-hour drive to stock up on your favorite Costco products.
Additionally, there are threads in many of the Expat Facebook groups, where people often offer to do a Costco run for a small fee.
