Playa del Carmen has some pretty amazing beaches but sometimes a rooftop pool is a nice break from the beach and a little more practical.  At a pool you won’t have to bother with sand, seaweed, saltwater, or obnoxious beach vendors.  Plus, you have all day access to comfortable lounge chairs, an umbrella for shade, and poolside food and beverage service. Not to mention some killer rooftop views. Read on to find everything you need to know about the best rooftop pools in Playa del Carmen.

The Reef 28 Playa del Carmen

As much as I love the beach, I do find rooftop pools to be a bit more of a relaxing experience.  The beaches in Playa del Carmen are beautiful but can often be crowded, noisy, and offer little to no shade.  At a pool, you’ll likely have an umbrella and comfortable lounge chair, along with endless food and drink service.  Not too shabby!

How does it work?

Most of the rooftop pools are located on top of hotels in Playa del Carmen.  Even if you’re not a hotel guest, you can still purchase a day pass to utilize the pool facilities.  Access can vary by season (i.e. the rooftop pools are more likely to be open to the public in slow season) but in my experience, I’ve always been able to visit a rooftop pool during most times of the year.

Once you arrive, tell the front desk you would like to purchase a day pass for the pool.  They will usually lead you up to the roof where you can pay and then they will give you a wristband and sometimes a towel.  Since most of these are at hotels, credit cards are usually accepted.

How much does it cost?

The price of a day pass can vary but most rooftop pools typically charge around $400-$850 pesos (~$20-$40 USD) per person.  The cool thing is that this is usually a consumption charge, meaning you get to use that amount (or a portion of it) as a credit for food and beverage.  In my experience, that amount will usually cover an entree and 1-2 drinks.

When is the best time to visit a rooftop pool?

I would definitely recommend visiting a rooftop pool during the week.  The prices for day passes are typically cheaper Monday-Thursday, plus the pools will be less crowded with hotel guests.  You’ll also want to get there early to take full advantage of the day pass and secure the best chairs.

Best Rooftop Pools in Playa del Carmen

Here’s my ranking of the best rooftop pools in Playa del Carmen from least favorite to most favorite.  Honestly none of them are bad, but I’ve just ordered them by which ones I personally like the best.  The day pass prices I’ve listed below each are current as of 2021 but keep in mind these can definitely change based on the season and hotel occupancy, etc.

Marquee Playa Hotel

The Marquee Playa Hotel is a newer boutique hotel in downtown Playa del Carmen with a chic rooftop pool.  The design is super trendy with in-pool loungers and plush day beds.  With a Mexican-inspired menu and freshly prepared cocktails, it has become a popular spot for a pool day or evening drinks.

Day Pass Price

  • Everyday: Must consume in bar and restaurant (no minimum)

The Palm at Playa

The Palm at Playa is another popular Playa del Carmen rooftop. It has a fun overwater hammock and oversized day beds in the pool. The Palm at Playa rooftop doesn’t have the best ocean views directly from the pool, but it’s a fun and affordable place  to spend the day relaxing with poolside food and beverage service.

Day Pass Price

  • Everyday: $450 pesos (includes $300 in consumption)

Elephant GastroBar

Elephant Gastrobar (formerly IT Ganesha) is located on top of the IT Hotel and Residences in the residential Coco Beach neighborhood.  It’s a multi-level rooftop with a couple of different pools, offering in-pool lounge beds, as well as cozy restaurant seating.  With chill house music, the vibe is usually very relaxed making it a great rooftop for lunch, cocktails, and rooftop views.

Alessia Day Club at the Thompson Hotel

Open daily from 11:00am-7:00pm, the Alessia Day Club at the Thompson Hotel probably has the coolest rooftop pool in Playa, but it’s also one of the most expensive.  The Thompson Hotel Playa del Carmen is a modern adults only hotel that is known for their rooftop pool parties and is a popular spot for bachelor/bachelorette parties.

On weekends there is a live DJ starting at 12:00pm, which makes it a lively rooftop for drinking but probably not the best place if you want to relax.  Capacity is limited so advance reservations are recommended.  You can reserve your spot by sending them a message on Facebook.

Day Pass Price

  • Monday-Thursday: $650 pesos (includes $550 pesos in consumption)
  • Friday-Sunday: $850 pesos (includes $750 pesos in consumption)
Travelista Tip: If you are a digital nomad, be sure to join the Playa del Carmen Digital Nomad Facebook group, as they often offer a special work day pass for the Thompson Hotel.

Be Roof

Located on the top of the Be Playa Hotel in downtown Playa del Carmen, Be Roof is a chic boho style rooftop pool and bar. You can enjoy drinks in the pool, or just chill out on the daybeds or dining tables. They often have a live DJ spinning house music.  Its relaxed vibe makes it a great place to spend the day or night out with friends.  I really like Be Roof because it is one of the less well-known rooftops and is frequented more by locals.

Day Pass Price

  • Everyday: $200 pesos minimum consumption / $1000 pesos minimum consumption for daybeds

The Fives Rooftop

The Fives Rooftop is a chic rooftop pool located on top of the Fives Downtown Hotel and Residences (A Hilton Hotel). With a long infinity pool facing the ocean,  it’s one of the largest and nicest rooftop pools in Playa del Carmen.  The Fives Rooftop is new and stylish and offers some very comfortable padded lounge chairs, as well as a full food and beverage menu.  There’s also additional restaurant seating in the back for dining or working.

Day Pass Price

  • Monday-Thursday: $500 pesos (includes consumption)
  • Friday-Sunday: $700 pesos (includes consumption)

The Reef 28

I just recently visited the Reef 28 rooftop for the first time and it now gets my vote for the best rooftop pool in Playa del Carmen.  It’s located on top of the Reef 28 Hotel, which is an all-inclusive adults only hotel, just two blocks from the popular Mamitas Beach.  It’s a large rooftop, with multiple pools facing the ocean, as well as separate bar and restaurant seating.

During the week you can visit the Reef 28 rooftop for only a $400 pesos consumption fee, which I think makes it the best value rooftop for the money.  The lounge beds are large and comfortable, and the poolside service was prompt and attentive.  Overall, it’s a great place for a relaxing rooftop experience with some killer Caribbean views.

Day Pass Price

  • Monday-Thursday: $400 pesos (includes consumption)
  • Friday-Sunday: $600 pesos (includes consumption)

Are you a beach person or pool person? I’m personally a bit of both so I love to mix it up by visiting a Playa del Carmen rooftop pool every now and again.
