Why Buy a Playa del Carmen Day Pass?

Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya is home to some of the most luxurious resorts in the world – and many of them offer day passes that let you enjoy all their amenities and services without having to stay the night.

Day passes are typically much cheaper than booking a room at a resort for a night.

They’re a great option if you live in Playa del Carmen or if you’re staying at a small hotel or AirBnB in downtown Playa del Carmen and want to treat yourself to a luxury resort for the day.

With a day pass, you’ll get full access to the resort’s expansive pools, beaches, and lounge beds, as well as unlimited food and alcohol from the open bar.

Each resort has different rules but you can typically visit from early morning to early evening.

How to Purchase a Playa del Carmen Resort Day Pass

There are a couple of different ways to purchase hotel day passes:

Book Online with Resort Pass

In recent years, there have been some new apps and online booking tools that have popped up and partnered with resorts in Riviera Maya to offer day passes that can be easily booked online.

I recommend using Resort Pass, which is an online booking tool and app that allows you to search for and reserve Playa del Carmen day passes online.

This gives you the convenience to check availability, see a full list of offerings, and make the payment online with a credit card.

Plus, Resort Pass also offers some special package deals at Playa del Carmen hotels for spa treatments, cabana rentals, champagne upgrades, and other fun add-ons.

Call the Hotel Directly

While Resort Pass is the most convenient booking option, not all hotels are on the platform and can be booked online.

In this case, the best way to reserve a day pass is by calling the Front Desk of the hotel and asking about the day pass prices and offerings.

Sometimes hotels do not offer day passes if their occupancy is very high so you’ll want to call first and confirm availability for the day of your visit.

🗣️ Don’t worry, I’ve included all the hotel phone numbers in this post and they all speak English!

Once you arrive at the hotel, head to the Front Desk to purchase your day pass.

You’ll need to present a photo ID and the payment can be made in cash or by credit card. Then you’ll get a wristband granting you access to the resort facilities.

How to Get to a Playa del Carmen Resort for a Day Pass

These are the best ways to get to the Riviera Maya resorts for a day pass if you don’t have a car:

Take a taxi

The easiest way to get to these Riviera Maya resorts from Playa del Carmen is by taking a taxi.  You can easily hail a taxi from downtown Playa del Carmen and most taxis will have set rates to the major resorts.

You can expect the price to be around $500-$600 pesos ($25-$30 USD) each way depending on how far it is from Playa del Carmen. For the return trip, the resort can help you to get a taxi.

Playa del Carmen Taxi

Take a colectivo

Alternatively, the cheapest way to get there is by taking a colectivo from Playa del Carmen, which is a shared van service that runs continuously up and down the main highway.

While this is much more inexpensive, keep in mind that most of the Riviera Maya resorts are located quite a distance from the highway so once you get off the colectivo, you’ll have to walk a long way in the sun to get to the hotel lobby.

You can get on a colectivo at the main bus depot in downtown Playa del Carmen near the Chedraui grocery store and the main highway 307.

For resorts south of Playa del Carmen, you’ll want to get on a colectivo headed towards Tulum.  For resorts north of Playa del Carmen, you’ll want to get on a colectivo or Playa Express headed towards Cancun.

The price should be less than $50 pesos each way.  You can find more detailed instructions on taking colectivos in my Playa del Carmen transportation guide

Tips for Playa del Carmen Day Passes

Follow these tips to make the most of your day pass experience:

  • Bring an ID: Be sure to bring a photo ID as you will need to present this when purchasing your day pass. It’s not uncommon for them to keep your ID or passport at the Front Desk while you’re on property and you’ll need to pick it up before you leave.
  • Get there early: Get there as early as possible to take full advantage of your time there and get the most bang for your buck.  Plus, with an early start you’ll have a better chance of getting the best lounge chairs at the pool or beach clubs.
  • Don’t bring a towel: Towels will most likely be provided at the resort so you won’t need to bring one.  Bring biodegradable sunscreen, a sun hat, and any of your favorite beach and pool items.
  • Bring a change of clothes: Bring a change of clothes to change into at the end of the day so you’re dry for the return trip. Also, some resorts have dress codes if you’re able to dine at the restaurants in the evening.

🇲🇽 Traveling to Mexico soon?

These are the Mexico travel resources I use and recommend:

🏨 Hotels: I always find the best deals for Mexico hotels and resorts on Expedia or Booking.com. If you prefer a vacation rental, check VRBO as they are often cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

✈️ Flights: I recommend using Skyscanner for the best Mexico flight deals. Be sure to sign up for their price alerts for your preferred travel dates.

🚗 Rental Cars: I recommend using Discover Cars because you can compare multiple car rental companies and see detailed ratings for overall value, ease of pick-up, efficiency of agents, car condition, and overall time spent.

🚙 Cancun Airport Transportation: I recommend booking a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation for the quickest and most hassle-free option!

🤿 Tours & Activities: I always use Viator or GetYourGuide for booking tours and activities in Mexico. You can cancel up to 24 hours before the tour for a full refund, plus they have excellent customer service if you were to have any issues.

🚨 Travel Insurance: After my Dad broke his hand in a taxi accident in Playa del Carmen, I always recommend buying travel insurance before your trip for added peace of mind! I recommend Travel Insurance Master for short trips or Safety Wing for digital nomads.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen: Don’t forget to add biodegradable sunscreen to your Mexico packing list! Regular sunscreen is prohibited on most snorkeling tours, so you’ll need to pack some biodegradable sunscreen for sun protection. I recommend Sun Bum Sunscreen, which is reef-friendly, vegan, and cruelty-free.
