1. Trek Through Underground Caves at Rio Secreto

Step into a magical world hidden beneath the surface by visiting Rio Secreto.

This natural wonder just south of Playa del Carmen offers an unforgettable adventure through its crystal-clear waters and majestic underground caves.

Because it’s entirely underground, Rio Secreto is one of the best rainy day activities in Playa del Carmen.

While visiting this attraction, you’ll get to trek through the underground rivers and caves with a knowledgeable guide and see some out-of-this-world stalactites and stalagmites.

It’s a really fun and unique experience that will really make you appreciate the beauty of nature!

Plus, what I love about Rio Secreto is that isn’t not super commercialized and the groups are limited to 10 people so it’s a much more personalized experience.

2. Get a Massage or Spa Treatment

Rainy days in Playa del Carmen are the perfect excuse to pamper yourself with a soothing massage or spa treatment.

If you’re looking to indulge in luxury, the spa at the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen is my personal favorite! It’s got a totally unique Cenote Spa along with saunas, steam rooms, and hot and cold pools.

And with an array of treatments that blend modern techniques with ancient Mayan rituals, it’s an experience that will leave you feeling revitalized and refreshed.

For those on a budget, Quinto Elemento is a small local spa that offers high quality services and some of the best massages in Playa del Carmen without breaking the bank.

Bric Spa is another great option, known for its inviting vibe and excellent treatments at wallet-friendly prices. Treat yourself and turn a gloomy day into an oasis of relaxation!

3. Visit an Underground Cenote

Another great way to spend a rainy day in Playa del Carmen is by visiting an underground cenote.

Underground cenotes are basically like underground caves filled with crystal clear, fresh water. While visiting you can swim, snorkel, or simply take in these beautiful natural wonders.

I would recommend visiting Cenote Taak Bi Ha, which is one of the most beautiful cenotes near Playa del Carmen.

This large underground cenote is so impressive with its bright turquoise water and dramatic rock formations. It’s the perfect place to escape the rain and immerse yourself in nature.

4. Go to the Movies

Just like back at home, going to the movies is always a good option for a rainy day in Playa del Carmen.

There are two Playa del Carmen movie theaters just outside of downtown, where you can catch the latest releases: Cinemex at Centro Maya and Cinepolis at Plaza Las Americas.

Both are connected to large local shopping centers and you’ll likely need to take a taxi to get there.

And don’t worry, many movies are shown in English with Spanish subtitles. Just be sure to double check the online listing to see which language the movie will be in.

• If it says Español Tradicional or ESP, the movie will be in Spanish
• If it says Subtitulada Tradicional or SUB, the movie will be in English with Spanish subtitles

You’ll find most major releases available in Playa del Carmen, along with some independent and foreign films as well.

Located in downtown Playa del Carmen, the 3D Museum of Wonders is a truly unique and one of the best things to do in Playa del Carmen on a rainy day.

The museum features tons of optical illusions and 3D murals that you can pose with to create some pretty unique pictures.

What’s cool is that you can “jump into the art” and become part of the paintings, making them come alive with interactive poses.

It’s a great option for families or groups looking to have some fun and take home some memorable photos. Plus, it’s all indoors so you don’t have to worry about the rain at all!

6. Visit Louis Tussaud’s Wax Museum

Another one of the best Playa del Carmen indoor activities is Louis Tussaud’s Wax Museum, a new attraction on Fifth Avenue and 14th Street.

This Playa del Carmen wax museum features has almost 100 lifelike wax figures of celebrities, athletes, and historical figures, making it a fun spot to visit for all ages.

You can take pictures with your favorite stars like Johnny Depp, Cristiano Ronaldo, and E.T. or even take a seat in the oval office next to Barack Obama and Abraham Lincoln.

Located in downtown Playa del Carmen, the Frida Kahlo Museum Riviera Maya is dedicated to one of Mexico’s most beloved artists.

The digital museum is one of the best things to do when it rains in Playa del Carmen and showcases some works from the famous artist along with exhibits on her life and legacy.

While it’s not as large or impressive as the original Frida Kahlo museum in Mexico City, it’s a great spot for art lovers or anyone looking to learn more about Mexican culture and history.

You’ll get to see some interesting art pieces and learn more about the life and struggles of Frida Kahlo and her impact on the world of art.

8. Go Shopping at Quinta Alegria

For some retail therapy, head to Quinta Alegria–a shopping mall in downtown Playa del Carmen.

This mall is pretty much enclosed and has some of the best shopping in Playa del Carmen with international retail brands like Forever 21, American Eagle, and Aerie.

There’s also an Italia racing simulator, where you can suit up and drive in a Formula One car in a virtual race!

Plus, there’s a Starbucks and some other restaurants and ice creams shops like Haagen-Dazs if you want to take a break and grab a snack.

9. Go Bar Hopping on 5th Avenue

If you’re looking for things to do in Playa del Carmen in the rain and in the mood for some drinks and fun, 5th Avenue is the place to be–rain or shine!

Even on a rainy day, 5th Avenue Playa del Carmen remains lively and you can easily spend hours hopping from one bar to the next.

Try out some local drinks like margaritas or mezcal at some of these best bars in Playa del Carmen while listening to live music or people watching.

There’s something for everyone on this bustling street, from lively sports bars to touristy spots like Señor Frog’s or Dick & Willy’s Daiquiri Bar.

10. Go Shopping at Grand Outlet Riviera Maya

If you’re up for an adventure and don’t mind a little bit of a drive, you’ve got to check out the Grand Outlet Riviera Maya.

This outlet mall near Cancun is brand new and has lots of different retailers, including popular international brands like Nike, Calvin Klein, and Guess.

Even though it’s not technically in Playa del Carmen, it’s about a 45-minute drive away and definitely worth the trip for some great deals on brand name items.

Plus, what makes this place really stand out are the fun activities available. It’s got go-karts, climbing walls, an ice skating rink, and more.

Now it’s still pretty new so I don’t think everything is open yet but it’s still worth checking out if you have a car and are looking for some retail therapy.

11. Play Games at the Warehouse PDC

Lastly, if you’re still looking for indoor things to do on a rainy day in Playa del Carmen, head to the Warehouse PDC.

This newer bar has lot of fun games to keep you entertained like pickleball, ping pong, video games, and board games.

Plus, they’ve got craft brews and speciality cocktails, along with a full menu of food and appetizers.

It’s a fun place to spend the evening and escape the rain while enjoying some competitive games and good drinks with friends.
