Just be aware that the Caribbean hurricane season runs from June to November, so there is a higher chance of storms during these months.

You can snorkel or scuba dive at the underwater museum, and both are incredible experiences. If you’re lucky, you might even spot some sea turtles.

Isla Mujeres is a small island, just a 20-minute ferry ride off the coast of Cancun. I recommend trying out the new Xcaret Xailing ferry service to visit the island, which leaves directly from the Hotel Zone.

Once there, you can spend a day on Playa Norte (one of the best beaches in the world) or rent a golf cart and drive all around the island to explore island attractions like Punta Sur.

Additionally, Isla Contoy is an uninhabited island just past Isla Mujeres. The only way to get there is by boat, so I’d recommend taking a boat tour from Cancun that stops at Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy.

There are also some great snorkeling spots along the way and beautiful views of the blue water surrounding the Riviera Maya.

Visit Chichen Itza and Other Nearby Ruins

Chichen Itza and other Mayan Ruins are a must-do for history buffs in Cancun.

Chichen Itza is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. It’s the most well-known Mayan city in the world and one of the best places to learn about the local culture.

Chichen Itza is about 2.5 hours from Cancun, but well worth the trip. However, the Cobá Ruins and the Tulum Ruins are also great historical spots that are much closer.

Whether you’re traveling to Chichen Itza, or the nearby islands, I’d recommend looking into private tours around Cancun to make your trip a little easier.

And If you don’t want to leave the city to explore some ruins, El Rey Archaeological Zone and San Miguelito Archeological Site are small ruins in the Hotel Zone.

• Be prepared for the seaweed: Unfortunately the beaches in Cancun and the surrounding Riviera Maya have seen a rise in sargassum (a type of seaweed) in recent years.  Hotels and resorts do their best to clear away the seaweed but it’s still possible there will be some seaweed present during your visit. 

• Don’t drink the water: The tap water in Cancun is not safe to drink and you should stick to bottled or filtered water when visiting.  I recommend carrying a collapsible water bottle to help you stay hydrated.

• Prepare for the weather: Keep an eye on the weather and pack for your vacation accordingly, especially if you’re visiting during hurricane season. Most of the time, everything is sunny and beautiful, and when it does rain, it usually doesn’t last all day. But it’s a good idea to bring a compact umbrella and light raincoat, just in case.
