About Bacalar

Officially designated as one of Mexico’s magic towns (pueblos magicos), Bacalar is a small town about 4 hours south of Cancun, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo.

You’ll also find the Bacalar town center, which is built up right around the lagoon and has a small main square, with a few restaurants and shops. 

There’s also a fort in the center of town, known as the Fort of San Felipe, which was built to protect the town from pirates who enter via the “Canal de los Piratas” (Pirate’s Channel).

Located about 2.5 hours from both Cancun and Playa del Carmen, Holbox (pronounced “Hole-bosh”) is a small island with a very laid-back, authentic atmosphere. 

At approximately 26 miles (42 km) long and 1 mile (1.6 km) wide, Holbox is a cute and colorful tropical island that is also one of Mexico’s “pueblos magicos” (magic towns).

Most activities, hotels, and restaurants are located on the west side. What most people don’t realize is that most of the island is not developed, which makes it feel a lot smaller than it is. 

The roads are not paved, and very few cars are on the island. People get around on foot, by bicycle, or with golf cart taxis.

Holbox is also known for its bioluminescence–an amazing natural phenomenon that occurs when plankton in the water lights up at night.

The island is still up-and-coming and largely undeveloped so it’s best if you’re looking for a quiet beach getaway but willing to forgo some of the comforts of more developed beach towns.

How to Get to Bacalar

Technically, the nearest airport to Bacalar is Chetumal International Airport. However, it’s a small airport with few direct flights so most tourists will fly into Cancun International Airport.

Cancun Airport is about 208 miles (335 km) from Bacalar, a 4-hour drive. It’s easiest to rent a car and drive from Cancun to Bacalar. 

It’s a pretty straightforward drive on a well-maintained highway and you’ll pass through Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

Additionally, the new Tulum International Airport (TQO) offers a more convenient option for traveling to Bacalar, as it’s located just 2 hours away.

If you don’t feel comfortable renting a car, you can also take an ADO bus to Bacalar from downtown Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum.

The ADO bus is fast, affordable, and comfortable, making it a great option for solo or budget travelers.

How to Get to Holbox

Holbox is a bit easier to get to than Bacalar just because it’s closer to Cancun Airport and other Riviera Maya destinations. 

To get to Holbox, you’ll fly into Cancun International Airport, then take ground transportation to the small town of Chiquila (2 hours), then take the ferry over to Holbox Island.

For the ground transportation portion, you can take a shared shuttle or book a private transfer from the airport.  ADO buses also depart for Chiquila from downtown Cancun.

The bus or transfer will drop you off right at the ferry terminal. Then it’s just a 30-minute ferry ride over to Holbox Island.

There are also buses from other destinations in the Yucatan Peninsula to Chiquila. For example, traveling from Playa del Carmen to Holbox isn’t too difficult either.

Once you’re in Holbox, getting around is pretty straightforward. There are no paved roads and very few cars. Most people get around simply by walking or or hiring a golf cart taxi.

And because of its proximity to several lesser-known Mayan ruins, it’s a great starting point for exploring archeological ruins and historical sites.

Bacalar is a less touristy and crowded town, and it has more of an authentic Mexican feel to it. So, it’s perfect for a low-key vacation or weekend trip.

Who is Holbox best suited for?

Holbox is best suited for beach lovers, as its stunning white sand beaches with shallow turquoise water are some of the best in Mexico.

The tropical island also draws adventure travelers and thrill seekers. Swimming with whale sharks is one of the most popular activities, but there’s also great kite surfing, paddleboarding, boat tours, and other fun excursions.

Holbox also has a very romantic feel. Compared to Bacalar, you’ll be able to find much more luxurious and high-end accommodations with spas, rooftop pools, and other amenities.

Additionally, Holbox is not as popular with families, but more suited for couples and younger travelers looking for a low-key beach getaway.

So in the absence of concrete data, I can share my personal experience from my numerous visits.

I’ve always felt very safe in both Bacalar and Holbox and they are some of the safest places I’ve visited in the Yucatan peninsula. 

Overall, they are very quiet and laid-back destinations, with a small-town atmosphere.  I’ve visited them solo and with friends, and have never experienced any safety concerns. 

But just like anywhere else, it’s always important to take basic precautions and stay aware of your surroundings, especially at night.  

Petty theft can occur, so it’s best to keep your valuables secure at all times and never leave them unattended.

However, I would say that Holbox feels slightly safer than Bacalar just because it’s smaller and more isolated. 

But again, both destinations have a low crime rate and are generally very safe for tourists. Of course, safety is never guaranteed, but you can feel very comfortable traveling to either.

Bacalar and Holbox can be classified as “off the beaten path” because fewer tourists travel to either location. Therefore, they not as expensive as Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

Holbox, on the whole, is more expensive than Bacalar because it’s an island with limited resources and supplies.

How expensive is Bacalar?

Even though Bacalar is a small, old-school town, it sees increased tourism each year. Because so many tourists come and go, the town has higher prices than non-touristic towns.

That said, Bacalar is still a relatively budget-friendly place. Accommodations, activities, and tours are available to fit all budgets.

If you’re a luxury traveler, you can stay at an opulent lakefront resort. If you’re a budget traveler, you can stay at one of the hostels or small hotels just a few blocks from the lake.

The same goes for tours–if you have the money, you can opt for a private boat for a luxury sail around the lagoon.

If you want to do something more low-key, you can take a group tour around the lake or a kayak tour.

So, Bacalar is more expensive than the national average. But compared to places like Cancun and Playa del Carmen, finding a good deal is still very easy.

Holbox is more expensive than Bacalar, as can be expected because it’s an island and everything has to be imported.

This means that prices for eating out, hotels, and other simple amenities are a bit higher.

But at the same time, there are tons of options for affordable tours and activities. It’s pretty easy to spend a few days at the beach without spending much money.

Holbox Island is also more affordable than other nearby islands like Isla Mujeres. Holbox has fewer travelers and, therefore, lower prices for tourists.

So, Holbox is slightly more expensive than Bacalar and other low-key places because it’s a small island in the middle of nowhere. But the prices are still affordable, and you can easily get by on a budget.

Bacalar Lagoon

Bacalar Lagoon is 26 miles (42 km) long and 1.2 miles (2 km) wide. Its depth ranges from 1 foot to 328 feet (100 m).

The lagoon has varying shades of greens, blues, and turquoise waters. The water tends to be lighter and more transparent in more shallow areas. You can admire the color variations right from the shore or docks.

Bacalar Lagoon is swimmable and swimming in the lagoon is the best thing to do in Bacalar. The water is usually warm, crystal-clear, and calm.

The water is usually clear year-round, making it an excellent haven from the beach when sargassum (seaweed) gets bad in the Caribbean Sea.

Few natural “beaches” exist in Bacalar. Instead, several public docks extend into the lagoon. These can be busy, especially during peak season or at sunset. 

However, private docks can be found at lakefront restaurants, hotels, and hostels.

Holbox Beaches

Holbox arguably has some of the best beaches in Mexico and they are honestly dreamy! 

The best thing about the beaches in Holbox is that the water is super shallow, so you can walk a good ways offshore to enjoy the crystal clear waters.

Most people spend time around Playa Holbox, right in the heart of everything and within walking distance of the best restaurants and shops.

However, Punta Cocos is a more secluded beach away from town, and Punta Mosquito is a popular sandbar easily accessible during low tide.

Plus, Holbox usually has less seaweed on its beaches, so it’s a great place to escape the seaweed in Playa del Carmen, Cancun, or the Riviera Maya.

Hotels in Bacalar

Bacalar Lagoon is very large, and there are many places to stay in Bacalar all around the lagoon including eco-hotels, boutiques, hostels, and resorts.

If you’re looking for convenience and don’t have your own rental car, the center of Bacalar is one of the best places to stay.

However, I’d also recommend staying out of town for a more peaceful retreat. Most lakefront hotels have private docks, and taxi drivers are always available to take you to explore the town center.

Hotels in Holbox

Most hotels in Holbox are centered around the west side of the island. The rest of the island is mainly uninhabited, as it is primarily marshes and mangroves.

You can basically stay at a beachfront hotel or at a more affordable hotel in the town center. Of course, the beach is where you want to be if your budget allows!

I’d also recommend staying a few minutes outside the main square to be within walking distance of all the action.

But if you do choose to stay further away, you can always take a golf cart taxi to get around.

Bacalar and Holbox have excellent restaurants and good vegan-friendly options. However, they are small tourist towns, so there are fewer options than in places like Cancun, Tulum, and Playa del Carmen.

Bacalar Restaurants

Most of Bacalar’s restaurants are around the main square and along the lagoon. There’s a wide variety, from formal Italian to traditional Mexican to lagoon-front joints serving seafood, burgers, and everything else.

The little courtyard across the park in the main square also fills with food vendors at night. However, they mainly sell desserts, like traditional marquesitas.

Walking a few blocks from the town center, you’ll find more local restaurants and street vendors.

Holbox Restaurants

Most of Holbox’s restaurants are on the main street or along the beach. There are many seafood options, as well as specialty vegan and vegetarian food.

There are only a few options for authentic Mexican food on the main street, so you’ll have to head to the Mercado Municipal de Holbox for breakfast or lunch.

If you’re interested in seafood, I’d recommend lobster pizza and fresh ceviche at one of the small seafood shops near the main street.

Bacalar and Holbox aren’t known as prominent party places, but you can still find good live music and bars around the small towns.

Bacalar Nightlife

Bacalar nightlife isn’t as good as Holbox, in my opinion. However, a few hostels and bars near the lake have live music, salsa dancing, and small parties.

If you’re looking for nightlife, I’d recommend staying in a hostel. This is the place to find other travelers, drinking games, and other fun activities. Otherwise, just enjoy the tranquility.

Holbox has a much livelier nightlife but can’t compete with popular Mexico destinations like Cancun or Puerto Vallarta.

A few bars stay open late and offer live music, techno, or electronic beats.

The Hot Corner is a popular spot on the main street, parallel to the beach. There’s usually specials, events, and good live music here.
